A bit of history of the Arab Baths (Girona)
This is a Romanesque building from the 12th century and, in fact, the best-preserved Romanesque-style public baths that exist.
If you look closely, you’ll notice its design mimics that of Muslim baths. That is precisely the reason for its name.
However, the building has undergone numerous renovations over the years. During invasions and sieges the city has suffered over time, it was badly damaged. Because of this, it had to be restored in the 13th century; and from then on continued to function as baths until their closure in the 15th century.
It was then that the Arab Baths of Girona passed into private hands. First, as part of a convent. Until the 20th century, when they became publicly owned again and were rehabilitated as the Arab Baths we know today.
Nowadays, it receives many visitors.
As a curiosity, there is a Game of Thrones scene filmed in the Arab Baths of Girona featuring Arya, one of the main characters. Because of this, it is also a must-see place for fans of the well-known medieval fantasy saga.
