Guided Tour of Girona: A Journey Through Its History

HOW TO GET TO FIGUERES

To dive into Girona, we first need to know a bit about its history. The city’s historic heritage dates back more than 2,000 years, starting with the first Iberian settlements on the peninsula.
Later, the Romans founded the original Gerona, which they called Gerunda in Latin.
After that, Girona went through various historical periods such as: the Muslim conquest, the transfer of the town to Charlemagne, the construction of defensive walls, and the flourishing of the Jewish community, which today leaves us with one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe.
In the following centuries, the city grew and its walls were reinforced to withstand the many European wars that would take place later.
The Spanish War of Independence, unfortunately, caused significant damage to the city.
But Girona kept growing and adapting, with the construction of new infrastructures such as the current stone bridge, inaugurated in 1856.
Today, Girona still preserves these vestiges of the past and displays them as part of its identity.
Want to know more?
For now, we won’t go any further.
It’s better to let the streets of the city (and our guides) tell you everything it hides.

2. Monumental Girona Tour

On this tour, we’ll show you the most important historical sites and monuments of Girona.
What exactly will we see on this visit?

  • The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona: get ready to explore Girona’s cathedral, both inside and out. It’s known for having the second widest Gothic nave in the world (after St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican).
  • The Arab Baths: at the foot of the cathedral, we’ll find Girona’s Arab Baths, one of the best-preserved Romanesque baths in existence.
  • Sant Pere de Galligants: the Benedictine Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, which today houses the Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia, is another must-see on our Monumental Girona route.

And if that weren’t enough, it’s worth mentioning that some Game of Thrones scenes were filmed at these three monuments. So if you’re a fan of this medieval fantasy series, you can’t leave without visiting them.
Of course, entrance tickets to the monuments are also included in the tour.
