Itinerary of the Guided Medieval Girona Tour

Do you know the fascinating history of medieval Girona?
On this 1.5-hour walking tour through the streets of Girona’s old town, we’ll dive right into it.
Here’s a brief overview of the highlights — the rest we leave for our local guide to share live and in person.
Let’s go!

1. Meeting at Plaça de Catalunya and Tour of the Jewish Quarter

HOW TO GET TO FIGUERES

We’ll meet at Plaça de Catalunya to start our journey through medieval Girona.
From there, our guide will take you through the Jewish Quarter (also known as the Call or Judería).
What makes this part of the city special?
Not only is it one of the best-preserved Jewish Quarters in all of Europe, but it’s also one of the city’s most emblematic places, where you can almost feel the old-time atmosphere as if traveling back in time.
We’ll go back to 12th-century medieval Girona and talk about the Jewish communities who lived here — how they coexisted with other communities, their way of life, and customs.

2. Girona Cathedral

HOW TO GET TO FIGUERES

We’ll continue through Girona’s medieval streets to the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona.
We’ll admire this monument as our guide tells us the story of this building with the widest Gothic nave in the world. Although we’ll only see it from the outside, you can learn more in our post about the Girona Cathedral.
If you want to visit inside, we also offer another tour, like Monumental Girona, where we explore the cathedral and discover its many relics.

3. The French Gardens and Walk Along the City Walls

HOW TO GET TO FIGUERES

After the cathedral, we’ll head to the back and reach the French Gardens, which offer another privileged view of this building.
From the French Gardens, we’ll see the Cathedral from behind. We’ll enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and even have moments for photos.
We’ll tell you where the garden’s name comes from, and you’ll discover it even inspired a poem.

4. Walk Along the Girona City Walls

HOW TO GET TO FIGUERES

We’ll continue our tour walking along the medieval city walls.
The original construction of these walls is said to date back to the 1st century BC. Later, they were reinforced under Roman influence and kept being modified over the centuries to meet the city’s defensive needs against the many invasions it faced.
Girona was located on the frontier with various territories it needed to defend against possible attacks, which is why the walls were so carefully maintained.
The medieval walls as we know them today were built in the 14th century.
But there’s much more…

5. Sant Cristófol Gate

HOW TO GET TO FIGUERES

After our walk along the walls, we’ll look for the Roman city’s exit through the well-known Sant Cristófol Gate.
This gate was opened in the Força Vella walls in the 14th century. Although the current gate is a restoration from the 18th century of the original.
From here, we’ll walk along the Carolingian walls in a pleasant stroll that will take us to our next stop on the Monumental Girona itinerary.

6. Visit to the Arab Baths of Girona

HOW TO GET TO FIGUERES

Located in Girona’s old town are the famous Arab Baths.
They are Romanesque-style public baths, considered among the best preserved in existence. With the appearance of Muslim baths (hence their name), this building functioned as public baths for centuries until the 15th century when they were closed and became private property, eventually becoming part of a convent.
We’ll visit the baths inside and share all the curiosities and history surrounding them.
The Medieval Girona tour includes entrance to this monument. To learn more about the Arab baths in Girona, click this link.

7. Visit to the Romanesque Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants

HOW TO GET TO FIGUERES

How about exploring some of Girona’s monasteries?
The Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants is a Cultural Heritage Site that was once a Benedictine abbey.
It was built in Romanesque style back in the 12th century and has survived through the centuries — though not without periods of decline.
The monastery has been preserved thanks to donations that allowed various restorations. Today, this building houses the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia, which is yet another reason to visit.
Our tour also includes entrance to this monument, which we’ll explore at a relaxed pace. If you’d like to learn more, we recommend clicking on this link to the Sant Pere de Galligants Monastery website.
