Thinking of visiting Cadaqués? A little history about it…
If you are en route to la Costa Brava, you cannot leave without making a getaway to Cadaqués.
You may even wonder what to see in Cadaqués.
Well, you are going to see that this genuine town has a great tourist and cultural offer.
Cadaqués is located in the area of Girona, specifically in el Cap de Creus peninsula.
It is said that the origin of its name comes from the words Cap de Quers or Cap d’Aques which means Cape of Rocks, and it could be a clear reference to the large number of rocks that can be seen in its natural setting.
Its history dates back thousands of years. And it is that there were already settlements at the time when the first settlers arrived by sea.
Throughout its history, the town has been home to a great variety of different cultures (Etruscans, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans …).
Unfortunately, like almost every coastal town in the Mediterranean, Cadaqués was not exempt from attacks by corsairs and pirates.
A document from 1444 recorded how in that year the town was burned by a group of invaders. To prevent this from happening again, the walls were built that would offer greater protection to the population.
In the relatively recent past, its inhabitants have been mainly dedicated to farming and fishing.
However, today, tourism in Cadaqués has changed the way the local population makes a living. Fortunately, it still retains the charm of its houses and streets, and its inhabitants have made an effort to continue maintaining their traditions.
