The Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants
The monastery of San Pedro de Galligans (or monestir de Sant Pere de Galligants in Catalan) is among the most characteristic and interesting monuments of Girona.
Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest due to its long history and its particularities, the monastery was, in its beginnings, a Benedictine abbey built in the Romanesque style.
History of the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants
This Benedictine monastery dates from the 12th century and is located a short distance from two very important points: the church of Sant Feliu and the Cathedral.
Its name comes from the Galligants stream (which today does not carry water) that was located next to one of the monastery walls. And it was this same stream that conditioned the construction of the building.
That is why many of the monastery rooms – which are traditionally located around the cloister – were built in a separate building.
The monastery survived over the centuries thanks to donations that made it possible to carry out numerous reforms. It passed from hand to hand, through different institutions, even hosting a Civil Guard barracks.
Today, the monastery is the headquarters of the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia.
