Guided tour Girona: a journey through its history
To get into Girona we first have to know a little about its history. The historical heritage of this city dates back more than 2000 years ago, with the first Iberian settlements on the peninsula.
Later, it was the Romans who founded the original Gerona, which they called Gerunda in Latin.
After this, Girona experienced different historical stages such as: the Muslim conquest; the delivery of the town to Charlemagne; the construction of the defensive walls; and the flourishing of the Jewish community in Gerona, which today leaves us with one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe.
During the following centuries, the city grew and its walls continued to be reinforced to withstand the many European wars that would take place later.
The Spanish War of Independence, in particular, unfortunately left many damages in the city.
But Gerona continued to grow and adapt, with the construction of new infrastructures such as the current stone bridge that was inaugurated in 1856.
To this day, Girona still preserves these vestiges of the past and shows them as part of its identity.
Do you want to know more about it?
At the moment we will not elaborate further.
It is better if the streets of the city (and our guides) are the ones who tell you everything it hides.
